Washington: The US State Department has confirmed the identification of the second American citizen killed during the fighting against the Russians in Ukraine. Stephen Sabeelski, a U.S. citizen from Hernando, Florida, was killed. A State Department official said Tuesday that he was killed in a clash with Russian forces in Ukraine without giving further details. The State Department officials contacted the family and provided all possible consular assistance, the official added.
"We reiterate that US citizens should not travel to Ukraine because of the escalation of the armed conflict and the isolation of US citizens in Ukraine by Russian government security officials," the State Department said in a statement.
The statement said that US citizens in Ukraine should leave Ukraine immediately if they are safe with any commercial or privately available means of transportation. A local news agency published the news of the death of Sabielsky, 52, who died during the war in the village of Doroshnyank. He previously lived in Cranesville, New York.
Russia said last week that two Americans had been captured during clashes with Ukrainian forces. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described them as "mercenaries" engaged in illegal activities. He said they would be held accountable for the crimes.
Peskov said detainees were not covered by the Geneva Convention because they were not ordinary soldiers. "They are soldiers of fortune, they were involved in illegal activities in the territory of Ukraine. They were engaged in firing and shelling against our soldiers. They risked their lives, ”he said.
According to local news agencies, the two U.S. citizens were currently operating in the Russian-backed separatist region of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine.
