Ottawa: Don't remember the previous Kanishka plane crash? 331 passengers, including Malayalees on board, were killed in the bomb blast on the Air India flight on the coast of Ireland that day.
An acquitted suspect in the 1985 Air India bombings that killed 331 people has been shot dead in western Canada, local media reported. Repudaman Singh Malik, a one-time supporter of the Sikh separatist Khalistan movement, who was acquitted in 2005 of the Air India massacre plot for lack of evidence, was reportedly shot dead outside his clothing business in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police did not confirm the victim's name, but said in a statement that a man was suffering from gunshot wounds and died at the scene. "It appears to be a targeted firing," Constable Sarbjit Sanga said, adding that a vehicle believed to have been driven by the shooters was "completely engulfed in flames" a few kilometers (miles) away. After the fire, the shooters, whom police are now looking for, may have fled in another vehicle, they said.
Air India Flight 182 was destroyed by a bomb off the coast of Ireland. It was the deadliest airstrike before the September 11 attacks on the United States when 329 passengers and crew were killed. Another bomb exploded at Japan's Narita airport, killing two baggage workers on an Air India flight. Two suitcase bombs were later found in Vancouver, home to a large Sikh immigrant population.
Only Inderjit Singh Riat was found guilty of the conspiracy, for making the bombs and lying at the trial of his fellow terrorists, one of whom was Malik. Prosecutors said the 2005 acquittal of Malik and Ajaib Singh Bagri could have been different if Riat had told the truth.
Riyath was paroled in 2016 after spending two decades in prison. The attack came amid a crackdown on Sikhs fighting for an independent homeland, and those behind it were in retaliation for the Indian Army's attack on the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
