Government to provide 1.5 billion euro funding for defense forces

 IRELAND: The government has committed to new funding for Defense Force recruitment, equipment and pay rises every year until 2028.

As The Irish Times reports, it comes after ministers approved proposals from Minister for Defence Simon Coveney at Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting.

Mr Coveney's proposals, based on the Commission's report on the defense force published earlier this year, mean defense funding will rise from the current €1.1bn to at least €1.5bn by 2028.

The government said the move represents a sharp change in defense funding and will lead to a better-equipped, better-paid army.

Among the commitments is expected a new radar system and significant investment in military hardware across the three branches of the defense force — the Army, Naval Service and Air Corps.

In February, the Commission on the Resistance Strengths detailed that they were not right now competent of solidly protecting the nation against assault, and put forward different proposition for expanded funding.
