iOS 16 Beta 1 First Impressions: 5 Cool Features Coming to iPhones This Year

HIGHLIGHTS

  • iOS 16 brings new photo editing options.
  • iPhone 13 series smartphones will get an improved cinematic mode.
  • iOS 16 Beta 1 is still buggy.
Apple recently released the public beta version of iOS 16 to all users with compatible iPhones. Earlier, it was only available to app developers, and the stable version is expected to be released at the end of September or October, following the launch of the iPhone 14 series. Apple already showcased iOS 16 during its WWDC event last month, but we downloaded the OS on our iPhone 13 mini, and today, we are checking out five features that iPhones are getting this year.

The procedure for downloading iOS Beta 1 to iPhones has already been discussed. However, if users decide to download it, we advise readers not to test it on the primary iPhone as it is still buggy and may lead to the loss of some data.

iOS 16 Lock screen:

Apple has significantly updated the iPhone's lock screen this year. Users will recall that Apple only recently began experimenting with widgets, despite the fact that Android phones have had them for a long time.

Widgets are now available for your iPhone's lock screen, but they are only available for native iPhone apps like Weather. Long-press the lock screen and choose Customize to access this option. To add widgets, users must click on the boxes beneath and above the clock.

You can also change the font and colour of the clock.

In addition, there is a "plus" symbol on the far right that enables seamless wallpaper changes for users. There is also a live tracking capability, although it is currently only compatible with a very limited number of apps. We can see the timer on your screen, for instance.

Similar to this, owners of iPhones may conveniently apply filters to their lock screen wallpaper.

iOS 16 Notifications:

Additionally, notifications with iOS 16 show up right on the lock screen. Users can reach the page by swiping up from the bottom.

Now, you might be wondering why the feature is necessary. First, it's critical to realise that as cellphones get bigger, swiping up from down might get challenging.

With the release of iOS 15, Apple also began experimenting with it by lowering the URL bar in Safari.

If not, the iPhone will still display notifications when it is unlocked by swiping up and down. But the experience was glitchy when we tested iOS 16 Beta 1. Users can still make modifications by going to Settings if they want to hide notifications.

iOS 16 Images:

Two topics will be covered in this section. The camera app comes first, followed by Photos.

You will first see two buttons for the main camera and ultra-wide camera when you open the camera right now. There was only one button earlier, and pressing it gave you the choice to swap. There is a separate button for filters on the upper right. Although iOS 16 doesn't add any new filters, it does feature a fresh, contemporary-looking UI. The tone and intensity of filters are now also programmable by users.

On the other hand, the iPhone 13 series of handsets now have a better cinematic mode that, in essence, blurs the background in films in a manner akin to that of the Portrait mode for still images.

Apple is adding a useful feature to the built-in editing tool for Photos in iOS 16. Users can now, for instance, copy and paste modifications onto different photos. Re-editing photographs that need a specific filter or colour adjustment is expedited.

Although we were unable to test this capability, Apple now permits users to use the iPhone's cameras as a webcam on a Mac.

iOS 16 Keyboard:

It's no secret that Google's Gboard is more user-friendly and dependable than Apple's native Keyboard. At least the dictation tool, which turns speech into text, is getting better on Apple devices. However, users can now type simultaneously in case the Dictation tool is unable to understand local jargon. It functions with programmes like Gmail and WhatsApp.

As we mentioned, iOS 16 is still laden with bugs, and the Keyboard also needs improvements.

iOS 16 Privacy

iPhones promise a lot about privacy, and it has introduced some useful features like App Tracking Data and native VPN. Now, there's a new feature called lockdown mode.

It is designed to protect against spyware like Pegasus. To use the feature, head to Settings > Privacy > Lockdown Mode.
