Famous writer Salman Rushdie attacked in New York. The attack took place on stage while he was speaking at the Shattaquah Institution in New York.
In a statement, the New York State Police said they are looking into an assault on author Salman Rushdie before a speech at the Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, New York.
A man suspect allegedly went up onto the stage at around 11 a.m. local time and attacked Rushdie and an interviewer. They went on:
"Rushdie was flown by helicopter to a local hospital after sustaining what appeared to be a neck knife wound. His state is still unknown. A slight head injury was sustained by the interviewer.
The suspect was taken into custody right away by a state trooper assigned to the incident. The situation was helped by the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office.
Rushdie, the notorious author of the Satanic Verses, is thought to have just started his speech at the Chautauqua Institution when the incident took place.
As Rushdie was being introduced, a correspondent for the Associated Press saw a man attack the stage and start hitting or stabbing Rushdie. The author was carried off or knocked to the ground, and the man was bound.
Since 1988, Rushdie's novel The Satanic Verses has been prohibited in Iran because many Muslims view it as blasphemous.
Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the late president of Iran, called for Rushdie's execution in a fatwa, or decree, that was published a year later.
Although the Iranian government has long since distanced itself from Khomeini's proclamation, a bounty of more than $3 million was offered for anyone who killed the British-Indian author, but anti-Rushdie feeling persisted.
A semi-official religious organisation in Iran increased the reward for Rushdie to $3.3 million (now £2.7 million) in 2012.
At the time, Rushdie rejected that threat, claiming there was "no proof" that anyone would be interested in the reward.
Rushdie released a memoir on the fatwa in that year titled Joseph Anton.
