New Delhi: Senior advocate R Venkataramani has been appointed as the new Attorney General. The appointment is for three years. Venkataramani will take over as Attorney General when the current Attorney General KK Venugopal's term is about to end on the 30th of this month.
Earlier there were rumors that Mukul Rothagi will be made Attorney General again. But Mukul Rothagi clarified that he will not take up the position of Attorney General. KK Venugopal also informed that he is not willing to continue in the position. Mukul Rothagi was the Attorney General for three years from 2014. After that, KK Venugopal continued as Attorney General for five years.
Venkataramani comes to the new position with more than four decades of legal experience. Previously served as a member of the Law Commission of India. Constitutional expert who passed away in 1979 P.P. Joined Rao's Chambers and was appointed Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court in 1997.
From 2004 to 2010, served as Special Senior Counsel for various Central Government Departments in the Supreme Court and High Courts. Appeared before the Supreme Court on matters relating to service conditions of employees of the Court. Served as receiver of court in Amrapali case. Also recently appeared in the Supreme Court in the Hijab case.
