Ahmedabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's mother Heeraben passed away. Heeraben died at the UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Center in Ahmedabad at 3.30 am today. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who came to Gujarat from Delhi on hearing the news of his mother's demise, paid his respects to his mother at her residence in Gandhinagar.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's mother Heeraben Modi has been cremated after she died in the early hours of the morning.
She was 100 years old, and had been in hospital in western Gujarat state - where she lived - since Wednesday after her health deteriorated. "A glorious century rests at the feet of God," Mr Modi tweeted on Friday morning. He reached Gujarat in the morning and lit his mother's funeral pyre.

Heeraben celebrated his 100th birthday last June. Modi also remembered what his mother had said when he visited her on her 100th birthday. On her 100th birthday, she said, "Work smart, live cleanly means work smartly, live life cleanly," Modi tweeted.
Heeraben Modi was born on 18 June 1923. Native to Vadnagar, Mehsana, Gujarat. Damodardas Moolchand married Modi at a young age. Modi is the third of six children. Children are Narendra Modi, Pankaj Modi, Soma Modi, Amrit Modi, Prahlad Modi and daughter Vasantiben Hasmukhlal Modi. Heeraben Modi lived with the Prime Minister's younger brother Pankaj Modi in Raisan village near Gandhinagar. Prime Minister Modi also visited Amma during the campaign for the recent assembly elections in Gujarat.
Last June, when his mother turned 100, Modi visited her home in Gandhinagar and performed pada pooja. Prime Minister tweeted that Amma's was a century-long life of sacrifice. Modi said that the life of a great century has been a journey to God's feet.

After the funeral, he attended events that had been scheduled in West Bengal state through video conferencing. The Indian prime minister often visited his mother to seek her blessings on important occasions and festivals. Her life and sacrifices had "shaped" his mind, personality and self-confidence, Mr Modi wrote in his blog on 18 June when Heeraben turned 100. "My Mother is as simple as she is extraordinary. Just like all mothers," he wrote.
