For the first time ever, electric vehicle sales surpassed diesel sales. Electric vehicles accounted for 24% of new car sales in Ireland between January and March - overtaking diesel sales for the first time. The statistics are contained in the government's new quarterly report on the implementation of the Cabinet Climate Action Plan.
The report shows that the government has implemented 75% of the work it said it would complete in the first three months of the year. 27 of the 36 activities scheduled for delivery were completed on time during the quarter. Three departments carried out all the activities during the quarter – Finance Departments; Enterprise, trade and employment; and foreign affairs.
However, the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications has the most to do with it. There was only a 71% delivery rate. Apart from that, the delivery rate of the agriculture department, which is the second highest activity, was 91%.
Of electricity, less than 35% was generated from renewable sources in 2022, with Ireland only halfway to its 2030 wind target.
Also described as "major actions" was the launch of the €1.5 billion Agri-Climate Rural Environment Scheme (ACRES) to help improve biodiversity, climate, air and water quality. There were 46,000 applications in the first three months alone, about a third of the country's 135,000 farms.
