Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested outside the High Court

Islamabad: Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested outside the High Court in the capital Islamabad. Khan appeared in court on corruption charges, which he says are politically motivated. Footage from Pakistan showed Khan being detained by paramilitary forces in armored personnel carriers after he entered the court premises.

He was ousted as prime minister in April last year and has been campaigning for early elections ever since. The current arrest comes at the end of this year when the general elections will be held.

A statement by the Inspector General of Police, Punjab, said Khan's arrest was ordered because he was accused of "corruption and corruption". Pakistani media reported that the case involved allegations related to the allocation of land to the Al-Qadir Trust, owned by Khan and his wife.

But Mr Khan said no law had been broken. In a video message filmed while he was on his way to Islamabad - released by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party before his arrest - Khan said he was ready for what was to come. "Come to me with the warrant and my lawyers will be there," he said.
"If you want to send me to jail, I'm ready for it." The PTI has called on its supporters to take to the streets - and protests have been reported in Lahore and Peshawar. Heavy security has been put in place in central Islamabad as the former prime minister is being produced in court.
