A man was executed for beating a woman to death in Alabama, in 2001, and the US administration resumed lethal injections to review the procedure.
James Barber, 64 |
James Barber, 64, died at 1.56am local time (7.56 BST) after receiving a lethal injection at a south Alabama prison.
In 2001, Barber was convicted of murdering 75-year-old Dorothy Epps and sentenced to death. Barber, a handyman, admitted killing Ms Epps with a hammer and got away with her purse, prosecutors said. Jurors voted 11-1 to recommend the death penalty imposed by a judge.
"Mrs. Epps and her family have been waiting 22 years for justice," the Alabama Attorney General's Office wrote in a court filing. Before he was killed, Barber told his family he loved them and apologized to Ms. Epps's family.
It was the first execution in Alabama this year since the state suspended executions last fall. Alabama Governor Kay Ivey suspended the executions in November to allow an internal review of the procedures.
The move comes after the state halted two lethal injections of the accused men because of difficulties inserting IVs into their veins.
