Two Greek Air Force pilots have died after their plane crashed while battling a forest fire on the Greek island of Evia, officials said. The defense ministry said the water-bombing plane crashed while fighting a forest fire near Platanistos. Platanistos is a Village in Karystos in Evia in the Central Greece Region of Greece.
The pilots have been identified as 34-year-old CDR Christos Moulas and co-pilot Pericles Stefanidis, 27. The intense European heat wave has spread wildfires in Sicily, Algeria and Tunisia.
Greek TV showed the Canadair plane swooping down to drop water on the fire, before turning sharply into a hillside and exploding. State broadcaster ERT said the plane crashed over the town of Karistos on the island where the fire was raging. At least three aircraft and around 100 firefighters are involved in fighting the blaze.
Defense Minister Nikos Dendias said the pilots lost their lives while trying to protect citizens' lives, property and our nation's environment. The Ministry of Defense announced that three days of mourning have been declared in the Greek armed forces.
