The Government has announced the expansion of the eligibility requirements to apply for civil service jobs in a bid to promote greater diversity in the service.
What does a civil servant do in Ireland?
Civil servants are government employees of the country and work in various sectors which include defence, housing, fisheries and any other government department.
The move will allow more people from a migrant background to apply to enter the civil service. Potential candidates holding 'Stamp 4' permissions will now be able to pursue civil servant roles in Government departments.
Stamp 4 permissions allow people from other countries to stay in Ireland until a certain date and allows them to enter employment. More than 20,000 Stamp 4 permissions were issued to residents in Ireland in 2022.
"There is an increasing need within the civil service to attract and retain skilled professionals across several sectors to ensure high-quality public services continue to be provided to our growing population," said Minister for Public Expenditure, NDP Delivery and Reform Paschal Donohoe.
"By opening up the civil service to include the thousands of people who have made Ireland their home, we have a real solution that both provides a greater recruiting talent pool, and helps drive a more diverse, innovative and inclusive public service that delivers for all of Ireland's communities," Mr Donohoe said.
The initiative has been developed by the Department of Public Expenditure, NDP Delivery and Reform and the Public Appointments Service. It follows work carried out by an interdepartmental working group to increase diversity across the civil service.
"Removing this eligibility barrier for those from a migrant background follows an in-depth study we conducted in partnership with NGO The Open Doors Initiative and global immigration services firm Fragomen," said Margaret McCabe, CEO of Public Appointments Service.
"Its removal opens up a wider recruitment talent pool for the civil service, that will further help us effectively implement our skills first approach to recruitment," Ms McCabe said.
