Amaravati: The death toll in yesterday's train accident in Andhra Pradesh has reached 14. Among the dead were the loco pilot and guard of Palasa Express.
Railways said 50 people were injured. The accident happened around 7 pm on Sunday. The Palasa Express rammed into the back of the Visakhapatnam-Rayagada passenger train which was stopped due to an overhead cable failure.
Railway sources inform that the accident occurred due to human error and the loco pilot did not heed the signalling. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that except for the derailed coaches, the rest were cleared by midnight.
18 trains were canceled due to the accident. 22 trains were diverted. Railways informed that the train traffic can be restored by 4 pm.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the accident. The Prime Minister announced a financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh to the families of the deceased. 50,000 will also be given as financial assistance to the injured.
