Arnhem, Netherlands – A 35-year-old elementary school teacher from Arnhem was arrested on October 7th on suspicion of sex offenses, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) confirmed on Friday.
The OM emphasized that the alleged incidents did not occur at the school. The suspect remains in custody, with their detention extended for 90 days on October 24th.
Due to privacy concerns, the OM has not released specific details about the case. However, local news outlet De Gelderlander reported that the teacher is suspected of engaging in sexual acts with a minor and possessing child pornography. It is believed that these alleged offenses occurred outside of the school setting.
The director of the school in Arnhem's De Paasberg neighborhood sent a letter to parents confirming the teacher's arrest. A parent, whose child had previously been in the teacher's class, shared their concerns with Omroep Gelderland. They revealed that their child has been taught by a substitute since October 7th and that the initial explanation for the teacher's absence was personal reasons.
The parent, who requested anonymity, described the teacher as well-presented and friendly. They added, "My daughter, who is unaware of the allegations, always spoke positively about him. He seemed like a nice man. As often happens in such cases, we never saw this coming."
The OM confirmed that the investigation is ongoing but declined to provide further details. De Gelderlander reported that no children from the elementary school were involved in the alleged offenses.
