Israel is intensifying its calls for the release of 29-year-old Arbel Yehud, who was abducted by Hamas during the October 7, 2023, attacks. The Israeli government has urged Hamas to include Yehud on the list of hostages expected to be released this Saturday, amid ongoing negotiations.
Yehud was kidnapped from Nir Oz, a village in southern Israel, along with
her partner, Ariel Cunio. While Cunio was confirmed to be in captivity, Arbel’s
whereabouts and condition remain uncertain. Israeli authorities have expressed
growing concern over Hamas’s refusal to commit to her release or provide
clarity on her situation, citing reports that she is being held by members of
the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), an allied militant group.
Concerns Over Compliance
Earlier this week, Mossad Director David Barnea and Shin Bet (ISA) Director
Ronen Bar returned from high-level talks in Egypt, where they raised concerns
about Hamas’s failure to deliver a comprehensive list of living hostages.
Israeli officials remain wary that Hamas may not fully honor the terms of the
deal brokered for hostage releases.
A Family’s Plea
Arbel’s father, Yehiel Yehud, released a poignant recording a month ago, in
which his daughter sent a message to her mother, saying, “My dear mother, I
love you and miss you.” This message has galvanized public and governmental
calls for her immediate release.
Adding to the family’s tragedy, Arbel’s brother, Dolev Yehud, was killed in
the October 7 attacks. His remains were discovered in Nir Oz months later. The
ordeal has cast a shadow over the Yehud family, especially as Arbel marked her
29th birthday in captivity this past June.
Mounting Pressure on Hamas
Arbel Yehud is one of 12 women believed to still be alive in Hamas
captivity. As the second stage of hostage releases approaches, Israel has
underscored the critical importance of her inclusion in the process. The case
of Arbel Yehud has become emblematic of the broader urgency to secure the
freedom of all hostages, as Israel continues to press Hamas to fulfill its
obligations.
The situation remains tense, with Israel reiterating its demands for
accountability and transparency regarding the fate of those held in captivity.
