Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi has announced plans to form a unity government, his spokesperson confirmed on Saturday, as he faces mounting domestic pressure over his administration’s handling of the ongoing offensive by Rwanda-backed M23 rebels in the eastern provinces.
The M23 rebel group's capture of significant territories and valuable mineral deposits in eastern Congo has escalated fears of a broader conflict. The situation has also intensified political divisions, with some opposition factions openly questioning the stability of Tshisekedi’s presidency. Addressing a meeting of the ruling Sacred Union coalition on Saturday, Tshisekedi urged unity, stating, “We must unite ... let’s stand together to face the enemy.”
Presidency spokesperson Tina Salama confirmed that Tshisekedi would initiate the formation of a national unity government and implement leadership changes within the coalition, though further details were not provided.
Since the beginning of the year, the Democratic Republic of Congo has suffered consecutive military setbacks in North and South Kivu provinces, amplifying criticism of the government’s military strategy. Opposition leader Herve Diakiese attributed the ongoing crisis to Tshisekedi’s governance, criticizing the proposed unity government as a political maneuver.
“Tshisekedi is more focused on securing his power, whereas our priority is to safeguard the nation,” Diakiese stated. “This can be achieved with or without him.”
