"Pay and Number Strategy" In Ireland, nurses from the Psychiatric Nurses Association began a nationwide strike today.
The association said in a statement that the strike was against "the HSE's continued failure to exempt mental health services from proposed cuts to nursing numbers and unacceptable restrictions on recruitment".
Nurses are only carrying out duties that are a core part of the nursing role. This essentially means ending all duties that nurses in the association currently undertake "on a goodwill basis". A spokesperson for the association confirmed that it will see some facilities not opening, nurses not completing non-clinically focused paperwork and nurses not attending meetings.
General Secretary Peter Hughes said this action was necessary to ensure the future development and sustainability of mental health services in Ireland.
He said staffing levels in mental health services had been reduced to "unsustainable levels" and this was negatively impacting service delivery and development. The PNA is pushing for discussions to address the issue of staffing in their sector, while engaging with the HSE under the guidance of the Workplace Relations Commission.
"Without resolving this dispute, the pay and number strategy will decimate mental health services, resulting in closures and cuts to services in the future."
A PNA representative confirmed that the PNA has not set an end date for the industrial action.
