The Government of India on Tuesday ordered the blocking of the X (formerly Twitter) account belonging to Pakistan’s Defence Minister, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, citing the dissemination of “disinformation and fake news” related to Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam.
The move follows a broader crackdown on digital platforms accused of spreading inflammatory or misleading narratives. Just a day earlier, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had banned 16 Pakistani-based YouTube channels, collectively amassing over 63 million subscribers, for circulating “provocative and communally sensitive content” targeting Indian audiences.
Users attempting to access Asif’s X profile from within India are now met with the message: “@KhawajaMAsif has been withheld in IN in response to a legal demand.”
Officials said the action is part of a continued effort to combat cross-border propaganda and maintain national security, especially in the sensitive aftermath of the April 22 terror incident in Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians. The Indian government has reiterated its commitment to curbing the spread of misinformation that threatens public order or incites unrest.
