A large-scale power failure swept across Spain, Portugal, and portions of southern France, plunging major cities into darkness and severely disrupting air, rail, and road traffic. The blackout caused chaos at key transport hubs including Madrid, Barcelona, and Lisbon, with several flights delayed or canceled, and metro and train services suspended.
While the exact cause of the outage remains under investigation, Portuguese grid operator REN has attributed the disturbance to a rare atmospheric phenomenon affecting Spain’s high-voltage power lines. The induced anomalies reportedly led to synchronization failures across Europe’s interconnected electrical grid.
Traffic lights malfunctioned, elevators stalled, and residents scrambled to stockpile essential supplies amid uncertainty. In Madrid, parts of the underground metro were evacuated, and long queues formed at supermarkets as people prepared for prolonged disruptions.
The blackout even forced the suspension of play at the Madrid Open tennis tournament and temporarily halted operations at Spain's nuclear power facilities, which were sustained via diesel generators.
Authorities have emphasized that, at this stage, there is no evidence of a cyberattack. Power has since been partially restored across affected regions.
