Letterkenny, Co Donegal – The community of Letterkenny and the wider County Donegal region is mourning the sudden passing of well-known local businessman Mr Terence Ponsonby, owner of the beloved Friars Rest chip shop. Mr Ponsonby passed away unexpectedly while in Spain.
For more than 25 years, Mr Ponsonby was the driving force behind the Friars Rest, building it into one of Letterkenny’s most cherished establishments. Known for his warm personality, tireless work ethic, and community spirit, he was a familiar and welcoming presence to generations of customers.
In a statement shared by the Friars Rest, a spokesperson expressed deep sorrow at the loss of a man who was, in their words, “more than just the man behind the counter – he was the heart of the Friars, always ready with a smile, a story, and time for everyone.”
“It is with great sadness that we confirm the sudden passing of our dear Terry in Spain,” the statement read. “He touched so many lives, not just in Letterkenny but throughout Co Donegal and beyond. We will share funeral arrangements and further details in due course. We are grateful for the outpouring of support and kind thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.”
Tributes have poured in across social media from customers, colleagues, and friends who fondly remembered Mr Ponsonby’s warmth, humour, and generosity.
“So sorry to hear this. A great character,” wrote Damian Devaney.
Tony Handford added: “Such a shock. Sending all our love to you all. Such a true gent. Always had time for you and such a funny gent too. May God look after you, big man.”
Mr Ponsonby’s passing leaves a significant void in the local community. He will be remembered not only for his contribution to the local hospitality sector but also for the genuine connections he built with everyone who walked through the doors of the Friars Rest.
Further announcements regarding funeral arrangements are expected to follow.
