Mumbai | May 19, 2025 — Chief Justice of India BR Gavai on Sunday underscored the importance of mutual respect among the three pillars of democracy — the judiciary, legislature, and executive — stating that all are equal and must uphold the dignity of constitutional institutions.
Speaking at a felicitation ceremony in Mumbai, CJI Gavai said, "The judiciary, legislature, and executive are three pillars of our democracy. No institution is above the other, and each must show respect to the other."
His remarks come at a time when discussions around judicial overreach have gained momentum, following a string of recent Supreme Court rulings that some critics claim intrude into the domain of the legislature and executive.
During his visit to his home state of Maharashtra, CJI Gavai also paid homage at Chaitya Bhoomi, the memorial of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in Mumbai. When questioned about a reported protocol lapse during his visit to the memorial, the Chief Justice dismissed concerns, saying he is “not fussy” about such matters.
Justice Gavai, who assumed office last month as the 51st Chief Justice of India, is only the second Dalit to hold the country’s highest judicial position. His visit to Chaitya Bhoomi was seen as both personal and symbolic, given his long-standing association with Ambedkarite values.
The Chief Justice’s balanced tone and appeal for institutional harmony were welcomed by many legal observers and political leaders alike, as India continues to navigate the complex relationship between its governing institutions.
