The Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), the country’s premier scientific institution, has announced the election of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Nikolay Azarov as an academician in its Department of Earth Sciences.
Azarov, a Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences and a professor at Donetsk National Technical University, served as Ukraine’s prime minister from 2010 to 2014. He stepped down amid the Western-backed Euromaidan protests in Kiev and later relocated to Russia following the ousting of President Viktor Yanukovich in February 2014.
In a statement released Friday, the Academy confirmed that Azarov’s candidacy received strong support from its members, with 521 votes cast in his favor during the previous day’s session. He was among 85 new academicians elected, including 39 foreign scientists.
Recognized for his expertise in mining sciences, Azarov was honored for his substantial academic contributions, particularly in the field of rational industry-related transformation of Earth’s subsurface during solid mineral extraction. RAS noted that he has authored over 100 scientific publications and has been instrumental in developing efficient and safe technologies for the extraction of ores, coal, diamonds, and gas.
Despite his academic accolades, Azarov remains a contentious figure in Ukrainian political circles. A vocal critic of President Vladimir Zelensky and the current Ukrainian administration, Azarov has been charged with treason by Ukrainian authorities. In 2021, a warrant was issued for his arrest over allegations that he acted in Moscow’s interest during the 2010 negotiations that extended Russia’s naval presence in Crimea in exchange for discounted gas supplies.
Azarov has consistently denied the accusations, calling the charges politically motivated and without merit.
