Srinagar An intense gunbattle is currently underway in the Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir, where security forces are engaged with an estimated four armed terrorists, according to security sources. The confrontation, which began in neighboring Kulgam, escalated as the militants moved into Shopian, prompting a coordinated response from Indian forces.
Joint teams of the Indian Army and paramilitary personnel are conducting the counterterrorism operation, aiming to neutralize the infiltrators. The encounter follows a heightened state of alert in the region after the launch of Operation Sindoor—India’s retaliatory military campaign in response to the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 civilian lives.
The Pahalgam massacre, which sparked nationwide outrage, triggered a series of precision airstrikes by India targeting terror camps deep inside Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK). The Indian government has since vowed an uncompromising stance on terrorism emanating from across the border.
In a televised address to the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized a new doctrine in India’s counterterrorism strategy.
“We will give a befitting response on our terms only. We will take strict action at every place from where the roots of terrorism emerge,” the Prime Minister said.
He further warned against the misuse of nuclear deterrence by hostile actors:
“India will not tolerate any nuclear blackmail. India will strike precisely and decisively at the terrorist hideouts developing under the cover of nuclear blackmail.”
Addressing the issue of state complicity in terrorism, Modi asserted:
“We will not differentiate between the government sponsoring terrorism and the masterminds of terrorism.”
The ongoing gunfight in Shopian is seen as part of India’s intensified security operations in the Kashmir Valley, following the revised strategic posture under Operation Sindoor. Authorities have sealed off the area and are maintaining heightened vigilance to prevent any further infiltration or civilian casualties.
Further updates are expected as the operation progresses
