In a pivotal development aimed at de-escalating tensions, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that India and Pakistan have agreed to a “full and immediate” ceasefire, halting days of intense cross-border hostilities. The agreement follows the deadly Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which claimed 26 lives, predominantly tourists, and sparked a cycle of retaliatory military actions between the two nations.
“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence,” President Trump stated on Truth Social. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who played a central role in the negotiations, echoed the announcement, commending the leadership of both nations. “Over the past 48 hours, VP Vance and I engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik,” Rubio posted on X. He praised the “wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship” of Modi and Sharif for choosing peace and confirmed that both countries have committed to initiating talks on a broad range of issues at a neutral venue.

India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri provided details of the agreement during a press briefing, noting that Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) contacted India’s DGMO at 15:35 IST on Saturday. “It was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land and in the air and sea with effect from 1700 hours IST,” Misri stated. He added that instructions have been issued to implement the ceasefire, with the DGMOs scheduled to reconvene on May 12 at 12:00 IST to ensure compliance. Indian government sources clarified that the ceasefire was negotiated directly between the two nations, initiated by Pakistan’s DGMO.
Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar confirmed the agreement, emphasizing Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace while safeguarding its sovereignty. “Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Dar posted on X. Earlier that day, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar disclosed a conversation with Secretary Rubio, underscoring India’s “measured and responsible” approach amid the crisis. While specifics of their discussion were not revealed, Jaishankar’s remarks highlighted India’s intent to prioritize stability.
The ceasefire marks a critical step toward de-escalation, offering a pathway for dialogue to address longstanding tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
