New Delhi – In a swift and decisive military response following Operation Sindoor, the Indian Armed Forces successfully neutralized more than 600 Pakistani drones launched in retaliation to India’s precision missile strikes on nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), defence officials confirmed.
This extensive defensive operation marked a rapid elevation of India’s air defence capabilities, transitioning from peacetime monitoring to full combat readiness within hours.
Full-Scale Mobilization of Air Defence Assets
According to senior defence sources, the response involved the activation of over 1,000 gun systems and 750 short- and medium-range missile platforms along the western border. The coordinated effort included advanced assets such as:
-
S-400 Triumf systems
-
Barak-8 and Akash missile batteries
-
DRDO-developed anti-drone technologies
The military’s Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS) and Akashteer nodes were also deployed across key sectors to provide a layered air defence shield.
Context and Timeline
The escalation follows the Indian military’s launch of Operation Sindoor on May 7, which came in direct response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The operation specifically targeted cross-border terror infrastructure in Pakistan and PoK.
In the immediate aftermath, Pakistan retaliated by violating Indian airspace with drones and missiles during the intervening night of May 8–9, targeting both border cities and key military installations in northern and western India.
Strategic and Tactical Supremacy
Despite the scale of the Pakistani response, no significant damage was reported, with all incoming threats successfully intercepted. Defence experts attribute this success to the Indian Armed Forces’ integration of advanced technology, real-time intelligence, and rapid tactical deployment.
The government hailed the armed forces for their operational effectiveness. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a visit to Adampur Air Base in Punjab, commended the Indian Air Force personnel, stating, “Our armed forces have paired technical brilliance with tactical acumen to establish clear dominance in the battlefield.”
Looking Ahead
India's robust air defence and retaliatory capabilities are seen as a clear message of deterrence amid heightened regional tensions. The Ministry of Defence emphasized that any future incursions would be met with "decisive and proportionate" responses to safeguard national sovereignty and public safety.
