New Delhi | 8 May 2025 – In a decisive blow to transnational terrorism, Indian intelligence officials have confirmed the death of Abdul Rauf Azhar, a top commander of the banned terrorist outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), during Operation Sindoor — a meticulously coordinated strike targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir.
Abdul Rauf Azhar, the younger brother of JeM chief Masood Azhar, was the principal architect of several high-profile terrorist attacks in India, most notably the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines flight IC-814 to Kandahar. His name featured prominently on the National Investigation Agency’s most wanted list and he had remained a priority target for Indian security agencies for more than two decades.
According to senior intelligence officials, Operation Sindoor struck nine terror facilities with high-precision air and ground assets, resulting in substantial damage to Pakistan-supported militant networks. Azhar was reportedly neutralized at a key JeM operational center identified as a high-value target. His death is viewed as a strategic breakthrough in India’s long-standing battle against cross-border terrorism.
Over the years, Azhar played a central role in orchestrating numerous terrorist attacks on Indian soil. In addition to the IC-814 hijacking, he has been implicated in the 2001 Indian Parliament attack, the 2003 Nagrota Army Camp assault, and the 2019 Pulwama terror bombing, among others. His operational reach and ideological influence made him one of the most dangerous terror leaders operating under Pakistan’s patronage.
The elimination of Azhar is being widely recognized within defence and security circles as a turning point in India’s counter-terror doctrine, demonstrating a new level of intelligence coordination and strategic resolve. Officials suggest that the success of Operation Sindoor reaffirms India’s ability to neutralize high-profile threats beyond its borders with precision and resolve.
