Naypyidaw, – Myanmar’s Prime Minister Min Aung Hlaing has called for a multipolar global system, arguing that a world dominated by a single power fosters inequality and conflict, in an exclusive interview with RT aired on Saturday. Highlighting the struggles of developing nations like Myanmar under a unipolar framework, Hlaing emphasized the need for a more equitable distribution of global resources to ensure stability and fairness.
In his remarks, the Myanmar leader critiqued the historical dominance of the U.S. and Western bloc, stating, “The US and Western bloc controlled the world through unipolarity. Then it became bipolar, and from bipolarity, it returned to unipolarity. This made the West stronger.” He pointed to the rise of Russia, China, and India as pivotal in shifting the global order, noting, “In this era, Russia, China, and India have made tremendous progress militarily, economically, and scientifically. As they have advanced, we have moved towards multipolarity, and that is how it should be. No single power should control the world.”
Hlaing underscored the importance of collaboration among these emerging powers, asserting, “If Moscow, Beijing, and New Delhi, which are three equally important global powers, collaborate and act in unison, multipolarity will become a global reality. No one will accept this unipolarity anymore.” For smaller nations, he advocated increased cooperation with these powers, stating, “We must try to cooperate with Russia, China, and India… We need to develop our own economic capabilities while simultaneously increasing cooperation with each other.”
The prime minister’s comments come amid strengthening ties between Myanmar and Russia. Hlaing was among the dignitaries who attended Moscow’s 80th anniversary celebration of the victory over Nazi Germany on May 9. Earlier this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted the steady growth in Moscow-Naypyidaw relations, citing a 40% increase in trade turnover in 2024 alone. Putin also acknowledged Myanmar’s role in facilitating Russia’s engagement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), expressing gratitude for their support.
Hlaing’s vision for a multipolar world reflects a broader push among developing nations to challenge Western hegemony, advocating for a global order that prioritizes equity and collaboration over unilateral dominance.
