BUCHAREST, May 22 — Romania’s Constitutional Court has unanimously dismissed an appeal by far-right candidate George Simion to annul the results of Sunday’s presidential election rerun, rejecting claims of foreign interference as unfounded.
“Following deliberations, the Constitutional Court unanimously rejected the request … as unfounded,” the court said in an official statement released on Thursday. The ruling is final, with a full explanation of the decision to be published in due course.
Simion, a populist and vocal Eurosceptic known for his admiration of former U.S. President Donald Trump and his opposition to military assistance for Ukraine, had filed the request on Tuesday, just two days after conceding defeat to centrist candidate Nicușor Dan, the current mayor of Bucharest.
Despite acknowledging that the vote count was accurate, Simion alleged that the election had been tainted by “an orchestrated effort to manipulate institutions, direct media narratives and impose a result that does not reflect the sovereign will of the Romanian people,” implicating France and Moldova in the alleged interference.
Reacting to the court’s ruling, Simion posted defiantly on social media: “The constitutional court has continued the coup! All we can do is fight! I call you to join me, today and in the coming weeks.”
Sunday’s election was a rerun of the November 2024 vote, which had been annulled amid findings of campaign finance violations and what authorities described as “massive” Russian interference. The initial voiding of the results drew international concern, including from the United States.
Romania’s Permanent Electoral Authority confirmed on Wednesday that the rerun had taken place “in a climate of integrity, fairness and transparency.”
The Constitutional Court is expected to formally validate the election results later on Thursday, with President-elect Nicușor Dan scheduled to attend the proceedings.
Dan, a mathematician and former civic activist, defeated Simion in a closely watched contest seen as a critical test of Romania’s democratic resilience against rising nationalist forces.
