Colombo, May 3 — A SriLankan Airlines flight arriving from Chennai was subjected to a comprehensive security operation at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) on Saturday, following a security alert issued by Indian intelligence regarding potential suspects linked to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
According to the Sri Lanka Police, Indian authorities had flagged the presence of up to six individuals suspected of having ties to the April 22 attack, prompting local law enforcement and airport security personnel to carry out a detailed inspection upon the aircraft's arrival.
In an official statement, SriLankan Airlines confirmed that Flight UL 122, operated by aircraft 4R-ALS, landed in Colombo at 11:59 a.m. and was immediately subjected to a coordinated security sweep.
“This operation was carried out in close coordination with local security authorities, following an alert received from the Chennai Area Control Centre concerning a suspect wanted by Indian authorities believed to be aboard the flight,” the airline stated.
The aircraft was cleared following the inspection, and no arrests or security breaches were reported. However, the precautionary measures led to a delay in the aircraft’s subsequent flight, UL308 to Singapore.
“The safety and security of our passengers and crew remain our utmost priority,” the airline added, affirming its commitment to upholding the highest standards of aviation security.
The heightened alert follows a deadly terrorist attack in the Pahalgam region of Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, in which at least 26 people—mostly tourists—were killed. The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy group affiliated with the banned Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), claimed responsibility for the assault, marking the deadliest incident in the Valley since the revocation of Article 370 in 2019.
In response, India has significantly downgraded its diplomatic engagements with Pakistan, citing its continued support for cross-border terrorism.
