Tragedy Strikes Delhi as Tree Collapse Claims Four Lives Amid Torrential Rainfall

New Delhi, May 2, 2025 – In a tragic incident resulting from severe weather conditions, four members of a family — a 26-year-old woman and her three children — lost their lives on Friday morning after a tree fell on the roof of their residence in Kharkhari Nahar village near Jaffarpur Kalan, Dwarka district. The impact caused the structure to collapse, trapping the occupants beneath the debris.

Local authorities were alerted through a PCR call, following which police and rescue personnel, including the fire department, swiftly responded to the scene. The victims were extricated from the rubble and rushed to a nearby hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival. The husband, identified as Ajay, sustained minor injuries in the incident, officials confirmed.

Severe Weather Disrupts Life Across Delhi-NCR

Heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds swept through Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) early Friday, leading to widespread waterlogging and significant disruptions to daily life. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert, forecasting severe thunderstorms with squally winds reaching speeds of 70–80 km/h.

Several key localities, including Lajpat Nagar, RK Puram, and Dwarka, reported heavy waterlogging. The inclement weather also affected air travel, with more than 100 flights delayed at Indira Gandhi International Airport. In an advisory issued on social media platform X, airport authorities advised passengers to contact their respective airlines for real-time updates.

Although reports initially suggested damage to a metal structure at Terminal 3, airport officials later clarified that no such incident had occurred. Airlines including Air India and IndiGo also issued alerts, cautioning passengers about potential delays and urging them to stay informed regarding flight schedules.

Damage to Infrastructure and Continued Weather Alerts

In addition to transportation delays, the storm uprooted several trees and caused damage to power lines and vulnerable structures across the city. The IMD has advised residents to remain indoors, avoid sheltering under trees, and take precautions such as unplugging electrical appliances and staying clear of waterlogged or exposed electrical areas.

According to the IMD, Delhi is expected to experience continued inclement weather over the next three days. The forecast includes heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong surface winds, with a yellow alert in place following Friday's red alert. Temperatures are likely to range between a minimum of 27°C and a maximum of 39°C.

Authorities remain on high alert as emergency services continue to respond to incidents across the city.
