Patna, June 22, 2025 — In a major pre-election announcement, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday declared a substantial increase in the monthly pension provided under the state’s Social Security Pension Scheme. The pension amount has been raised from ₹400 to ₹1,100 per beneficiary, with the revised disbursement set to begin in July.
Announcing the decision via social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the Chief Minister stated:
“I am happy to inform you that under the Social Security Pension Scheme, widowed women, the elderly, and persons with disabilities will now receive a monthly pension of ₹1,100 instead of ₹400.”
The enhanced pension will be credited directly to beneficiaries' accounts on the 10th of every month, beginning in July 2025.
According to official estimates, the decision is expected to benefit approximately 1.09 crore individuals across the state.
“The elderly are a precious part of society, and ensuring their dignified living is our top priority. The state government will continue to make efforts in this direction,” Kumar added.
The move comes ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, which are anticipated to take place in October–November 2025. With 243 seats in the legislative assembly, the state is poised for a high-stakes electoral contest, and the pension hike is widely seen as a significant welfare initiative aimed at bolstering support among senior citizens and other vulnerable segments.
Observers note that the pension revision marks one of the most generous increases in recent years, signaling the government's intent to position social welfare as a cornerstone of its election platform.
