Ahmedabad | June 12, 2025 Amid the unfolding tragedy of the Air India flight crash near Ahmedabad airport on Thursday, unconfirmed reports suggest that former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani may have been on board the ill-fated aircraft.
Sources close to Rupani's office have indicated that the senior BJP leader sustained serious injuries in the crash, although official confirmation on his condition remains awaited. The incident has triggered widespread concern, with neighbours and supporters gathering at his Gandhinagar residence in anxious anticipation of updates.
Rupani was reportedly en route to London to bring back his wife, Anjali Rupani, who is currently in the United Kingdom. The flight, AI-171, was bound for London Gatwick and was carrying 232 passengers and crew when it crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
Reacting to the incident, former Gujarat Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama recounted his initial shock:
“I had just returned from an event at Gujarat Vidyapeeth and was having lunch when I saw the news of the crash on television. Knowing that Vijaybhai was scheduled to travel to London today, I feared the worst. I immediately left for his residence in Gandhinagar and am now proceeding to the civil airport for more information,” he said.
In an official statement released Thursday afternoon, Air India confirmed the incident involving Flight AI-171.
“Flight AI171, operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. We are currently ascertaining the full details and will provide updates as soon as they become available,” the airline stated.
Rescue and emergency teams continue their efforts at the crash site, while authorities work to verify passenger identities and notify families.
