New Delhi, June 20 – As hostilities between Iran and Israel enter a second week, the Government of India has announced the evacuation of Indian nationals stranded in Israel, expanding its emergency operation to include both countries under ‘Operation Sindhu’.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that Indian citizens who wish to leave Israel will be safely evacuated. The operation comes a day after over 100 nationals, including students from Jammu and Kashmir, were successfully repatriated from Iran under the same initiative.
“In view of recent developments between Israel and Iran, the Government of India has decided to evacuate from Israel those Indian nationals who wish to leave. Their travel from Israel to India will be facilitated through land borders and subsequently by air,” the MEA said.
The Indian Embassy in Tel Aviv is coordinating logistics for the evacuation and has urged all Indian citizens in Israel to register at https://www.indembassyisrael.gov.in/indian_national_reg. For urgent assistance, the Embassy has activated a 24/7 control room, reachable at +972 54-7520711 / +972 54-3278392 or via email at cons1.telaviv@mea.gov.in.
The Embassy reiterated earlier advisories, urging Indian nationals to remain vigilant and adhere strictly to safety protocols issued by Israeli authorities and the Home Front Command.
“The Government of India accords the highest priority to the safety and security of Indian nationals abroad,” the MEA emphasized. “The situation is being monitored closely, and the Embassy remains in constant contact with the community to provide all feasible assistance.”
Over 100 Indians Repatriated from Iran Under ‘Operation Sindhu’
Earlier on Thursday, more than 100 Indian nationals, including 90 students from Jammu and Kashmir, were flown back to India from Iran. The group had been stranded amid intensifying hostilities in the region.
The evacuees were first transported to Armenia, then routed through Doha, before arriving in New Delhi. Families across the country expressed relief as their loved ones returned home safely.
Among the returnees was Varta, a medical student from Kashmir, who recounted the ordeal of living through missile attacks. “We were terrified. We thank the Indian government and the embassy for acting swiftly,” she told PTI. “When the Indian government came to our doorstep, it felt like home,” she added, also expressing gratitude to Armenian authorities for their support.
Middle East on Edge as Iran-Israel Hostilities Escalate
Tensions in the Middle East have reached a critical point, with Iran and Israel exchanging missile strikes for the seventh consecutive day on Thursday.
The conflict escalated dramatically following Israel’s targeted bombardment of Iranian nuclear and military facilities last Friday, which reportedly killed several high-ranking generals and nuclear scientists. In retaliation, Iranian missiles struck a prominent medical complex in southern Israel.
Meanwhile, reports indicate Israel has targeted an area near Iran’s Khondab heavy water nuclear facility, prompting authorities to issue evacuation alerts in the nearby cities of Arak and Khondab.
As the region braces for a prolonged conflict, India’s diplomatic and humanitarian response has been swift and coordinated, with ‘Operation Sindhu’ emerging as a critical lifeline for Indian citizens caught in the crossfire.
