London | June 24, 2025 — The Indian cricket community is in mourning following the demise of former India international Dilip Doshi, who passed away on Monday, June 23, in London due to heart-related complications. He was 77.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), along with several prominent figures from the sport, paid heartfelt tributes to the legendary left-arm spinner, who leaves behind a rich legacy in Indian cricket. Doshi is survived by his wife Kalindi, son Nayan Doshi—himself a former First-Class cricketer—and daughter Vishakha.
Born in Rajkot in 1947, Doshi made a remarkable impact despite a late start to his international career. He debuted for India at the age of 30 against Australia on September 11, 1979. Over a span of four years, he featured in 33 Test matches and 15 One Day Internationals, claiming 114 Test wickets at an average of 30.71. Known for his classical left-arm spin, Doshi was revered for his impeccable control, accuracy, and consistency.
In an official statement, the BCCI expressed its condolences:
“The BCCI mourns the sad demise of former India spinner Dilip Doshi, who has unfortunately passed away in London. May his soul rest in peace."
Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar also paid tribute, recalling their first interaction during the 1990 UK tour:
“I met Dilipbhai for the first time in the UK in 1990, and he bowled to me in the nets on that tour. He was really fond of me, and I reciprocated his feelings. A warm-hearted soul like Dilipbhai will be deeply missed. I will miss those cricketing conversations which we invariably had. May his soul rest in peace. Om Shanti. 🙏🏻"
Former wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel expressed his sorrow, writing:
“I’m heartbroken and still in shock about Dilip uncle… he was truly special. Nayan, thinking of you all with love and strength."
Ravi Shastri, former India captain and head coach, reflected on Doshi’s character and contributions:
“Really sad to hear about the passing of Dilip Doshi. Always immaculate, a gentleman to the core, and a fine, fine bowler. Heartfelt condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace."
Anil Kumble, one of India’s greatest spinners, added:
“Heartbreaking to hear about Dilip bhai’s passing. May God give strength to his family and friends to bear this loss. Nayan, thinking of you, buddy."
Veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh also paid his respects:
