June 13 | International Desk The Middle East teeters on the brink of a major regional conflict following a series of Israeli airstrikes on Iranian military and nuclear installations. In what the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) have described as a “pre-emptive operation,” dozens of Israeli Air Force jets carried out coordinated strikes across Iran, targeting high-value military assets and strategic facilities.
Among the most significant developments was a direct strike on the Natanz nuclear complex—long suspected by the West to be central to Iran’s uranium enrichment efforts—where explosions were reported Friday morning. Plumes of smoke and severe structural damage were seen in satellite imagery released shortly after the attacks.
The IDF confirmed that the “first stage” of the military campaign has been completed, and that the operation was aimed at “neutralizing imminent threats.” Iranian state media reported that the attacks claimed the lives of several senior figures, including Iran’s Army Chief, General Mohammad Bagheri. In addition to military targets, civilian casualties were also reported. Strikes in residential neighborhoods of Tehran resulted in the deaths of several civilians, including women and children, further inflaming public outrage across the country.
In response to the escalating hostilities, Iran declared a nationwide state of emergency. Explosions have been reported across multiple provinces including Kermanshah, Lorestan, and parts of Tehran, as emergency services race to assess the extent of the damage. The Iranian armed forces have been placed on the highest alert, raising fears that the conflict could widen into a regional war.
India has issued a security advisory for its nationals in Iran, urging them to remain indoors, avoid non-essential travel, and stay closely connected with updates from the Indian Embassy in Tehran. Indian authorities are monitoring the situation closely.
Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a carefully worded statement distancing Washington from the Israeli offensive, saying, “The United States was not involved in the military strikes carried out inside Iranian territory.” The move comes amid rising tensions between Iran and Israel, with global powers calling for restraint.
As international observers call for de-escalation, diplomatic efforts are underway to prevent further escalation. However, with both sides on high alert and rhetoric hardening, the region remains poised on the edge of a potentially broader and deadlier confrontation.
