PM Modi Leads 11th International Yoga Day, Calls Yoga “Pause Button Humanity Needs” Amid Global Tensions

VISAKHAPATNAM, June 21, 2025 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday led the global celebrations of the 11th International Day of Yoga, extending his congratulations to the people of India and the international community. Observed annually on June 21, this year’s theme was “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” underscoring yoga's universal relevance to both human and planetary well-being.

Addressing a large gathering in Visakhapatnam, Prime Minister Modi said, “Yoga isn’t just an exercise. It’s a way of life.” Emphasizing the inclusivity of the practice, he added, “Yoga is for all, beyond boundaries, backgrounds, age or ability. It has brought the world together.”

In a world grappling with rising geopolitical instability, Modi highlighted yoga’s potential to bring calm and clarity. “Yoga is the pause button that humanity needs to breathe again,” he remarked, reiterating its role in fostering inner peace and collective balance.

Reflecting on India’s leadership in the global yoga movement, the Prime Minister noted significant strides in scientific and medical research. “India is empowering the science of Yoga through modern research. We are also encouraging evidence-based therapy in the field of Yoga. Delhi AIIMS has done a good job in this regard,” he said, citing studies that demonstrate yoga’s role in the treatment of cardiac and neurological disorders, as well as its benefits for women’s and mental health.

“Yoga Takes Us from Me to We”

Addressing the broader relevance of yoga amid international conflict and unrest, Prime Minister Modi said, “Unfortunately, today the entire world is going through some tension. Unrest and instability have been increasing in many regions. In such times, Yoga gives us the direction of peace.”

He continued, “Yoga is a wonderful system that takes us from me to we. Yoga is the pause button that humanity needs to breathe, balance, and become whole again.”

Revisiting the origins of International Yoga Day, Modi recalled the overwhelming global support India received. “In the last decade, when I see the journey of Yoga, it reminds me of many things. The day India put forth a resolution in the UNGA to recognise June 21 as International Yoga Day — and in a very short time, 175 countries of the world stood with our country — this unity and support in today’s world is not a normal incident,” he said.

As International Yoga Day continues to gain traction across continents, the Prime Minister reaffirmed India’s commitment to promoting yoga as a tool for holistic health, global harmony, and personal transformation.
