Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Attend 17th BRICS Summit in Brazil as Part of Key Multilateral and Bilateral Engagements

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the 17th BRICS Summit scheduled to take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from July 5 to 8, 2025. Strengthening partnerships within the Global South and enhancing multilateral cooperation are expected to be central themes at this year’s summit.

During the summit, Prime Minister Modi will engage in high-level deliberations on critical global challenges, including reforming international governance structures, promoting global peace and security, strengthening multilateralism, ensuring the ethical use of artificial intelligence, advancing climate action, improving global health infrastructure, and deepening financial collaboration.

On the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi is also expected to hold several bilateral meetings, including a significant engagement with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brasília. The leaders will discuss expanding the India-Brazil Strategic Partnership, with particular emphasis on sectors such as trade, defence, energy, space exploration, technology, agriculture, and healthcare.

PM Modi’s Five-Nation Diplomatic Tour

The BRICS Summit forms part of Prime Minister Modi’s broader five-nation diplomatic tour in July 2025. His engagements begin with a landmark two-day visit to Ghana on July 2-3 — the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the West African nation in over three decades.

Following his visit to Ghana, the Prime Minister will travel to Trinidad and Tobago from July 3 to 4, at the invitation of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. From there, he will proceed to Argentina for bilateral discussions with President Javier Milei on July 4 and 5, focusing on trade, energy, and strategic cooperation.

After attending the BRICS Summit in Brazil, Prime Minister Modi will conclude his diplomatic tour with a visit to Namibia on July 9, following an invitation from President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, further underscoring India’s commitment to strengthening relations with African nations.

BRICS: A Growing Global Alliance of Emerging Economies

Established by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, the BRICS grouping expanded in 2010 to include South Africa. In a significant development in 2024, six additional countries — Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates — were inducted, reflecting the group’s rising global influence.

Indonesia is also expected to formally join BRICS, following a unanimous decision at the 2023 summit. Today, the expanded BRICS bloc represents approximately 49.5% of the world’s population, nearly 40% of global GDP, and 26% of international trade, underscoring its strategic importance in shaping the future of global economic governance.

Strengthening India-Brazil Relations

India and Brazil enjoy a robust and growing partnership, with Brazil serving as India’s largest trading partner in South America. In the financial year 2024-25, bilateral trade between the two nations reached USD 12.20 billion. Indian businesses have an increasing presence in Brazil, particularly across the pharmaceutical, automotive, and energy sectors.

Defence cooperation remains a key pillar of this partnership. Both nations are jointly developing Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft. In addition, Brazilian aerospace major Embraer has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Mahindra to collaborate on the production of the C-390 Millennium Multi-Mission Transport Aircraft, signalling deepening defence and technological ties.

Earlier this year, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva extended his unequivocal support to India in its counter-terrorism efforts during a conversation with Prime Minister Modi, following the Pahalgam terror attack and the launch of Operation Sindoor.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Brazil and his participation in the BRICS Summit mark a crucial step in advancing India’s global engagements, fostering South-South cooperation, and deepening strategic partnerships across the Global South.
