Russia and Ukraine Conduct Consecutive Prisoner of War Exchanges Amid Ongoing Conflict

Moscow/Kyiv, June 21 — Russia and Ukraine carried out a new exchange of prisoners of war on Friday, marking the second such humanitarian swap in two days, according to a statement issued by the Russian Ministry of Defense.

While neither side disclosed the exact number of personnel exchanged, the Russian ministry released video footage showing over a dozen Russian soldiers boarding a military bus. The ministry noted that the exchanges were conducted under the terms of a bilateral agreement reached during recent direct negotiations in Istanbul earlier this month.

Following their release, Russian prisoners were transported to Belarus, where they received initial medical evaluations and psychological support before being repatriated to Russia. The Ukrainian side, led by President Volodymyr Zelensky, also confirmed the exchange but refrained from offering numerical details.

In addition to the return of live detainees, the agreement has also facilitated the repatriation of fallen soldiers. Since the June 2 talks, Russia has returned the remains of more than 6,000 Ukrainian troops, while receiving the remains of 57 Russian personnel in exchange.

The continued exchanges, though limited in scale, signal a rare line of communication and humanitarian coordination between the two countries amid the protracted war.
