WASHINGTON/BRUSSELS | June 13, 2025 — U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to Iran, urging the country to reconsider its nuclear stance and avoid further escalation with Israel. The statement, posted on his Truth Social platform, comes amid intensifying regional conflict following Israeli strikes inside Iranian territory.
In his post, President Trump said he had repeatedly offered Iran opportunities to negotiate a peaceful resolution regarding its nuclear programme but claimed Tehran had failed to respond effectively.
“I gave Iran chance after chance to make a deal. I told them, in the strongest of words, to ‘just do it,’ but no matter how hard they tried, no matter how close they got, they just couldn’t get it done,” he wrote.
Trump warned of dire consequences if diplomacy fails, emphasizing the military capabilities of both the United States and Israel. He claimed that several Iranian hardliners involved in the recent hostilities had been eliminated, warning that “it will only get worse” if Tehran refuses to come to the table.
“There has already been great death and destruction, but there is still time to make this slaughter... come to an end. Iran must make a deal, before there is nothing left, and save what was once known as the Iranian Empire,” the post read.
The comments come as the international community expresses growing alarm over the deteriorating security situation in the Middle East.
European Leaders Call for Immediate De-escalation
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the latest outbreak of violence “deeply alarming” and urged all parties to exercise “maximum restraint.”
“A diplomatic resolution is now more urgent than ever, for the sake of the region’s stability and global security,” von der Leyen said on Bluesky, a social media platform.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz echoed similar concerns, calling on both Iran and Israel to avoid actions that could further destabilise the region. He confirmed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had briefed him on the military operations during a call earlier in the day.
“Germany is ready to use all available diplomatic means to exert influence on the parties to the conflict,” Merz said, reiterating that “the aim must remain that Iran not develop any nuclear weapons.”
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also weighed in, confirming that he had spoken with Israel’s foreign minister and planned to speak with his Iranian counterpart later today.
“I will insist on support for diplomacy,” Tajani told SKY TG24.
Mounting Global Concern Over Broader Implications
The escalating conflict has drawn widespread concern over the potential for a wider regional war, especially as nuclear negotiations remain stalled and military engagements intensify. Analysts warn that without immediate and effective diplomatic intervention, the violence could trigger long-term instability in the region.
With both Washington and European capitals now publicly urging de-escalation, all eyes remain on Tehran’s next move — and whether the message from global powers will translate into tangible diplomatic progress.
