Body of Missing Delhi University Student Sneha Debnath Recovered from Yamuna River

New Delhi, July 14: The body of 19-year-old Sneha Debnath, a Delhi University student who had been missing for six days, was recovered from the Yamuna River near the Geeta Colony flyover on Sunday evening, Delhi Police confirmed.

A native of Tripura and resident of Paryavaran Complex in South Delhi, Sneha was pursuing her studies at Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College under Delhi University. Her body was spotted floating beneath the flyover and later identified by family members, according to a report by PTI.

Handwritten Note Suggests Suicide

Preliminary investigations point to a possible case of suicide. Police officials revealed that Sneha left behind a handwritten note suggesting her intention to take her own life. The letter, written in her handwriting, stated: “I just feel like a failure and burden and it was getting unbearable to live like this. I had decided to end my life by jumping from Signature Bridge.” The note further clarified there was “no foul play” involved and that the decision was her own.

Close friends of the deceased informed investigators that Sneha had been emotionally distressed for the past few months and had shared troubling messages via email and WhatsApp earlier that same morning.

Timeline of Disappearance

Sneha was last in contact with her parents on July 7. As per family accounts, she had gone to drop a friend at Sarai Rohilla railway station. However, when she failed to return and her phone remained unreachable for over three hours, the family contacted the friend — who, to their shock, revealed she never met Sneha as planned.

Following this, the family traced a cab driver who confirmed dropping Sneha near Delhi’s Signature Bridge — a location that has previously raised safety concerns due to sparse CCTV coverage. The lack of surveillance footage has since posed significant challenges in tracing her final movements.

Search Operations and Official Response

On July 9, the Delhi Police Crime Branch, assisted by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), launched a large-scale search operation across a seven-kilometre stretch surrounding the Signature Bridge. Technical surveillance also confirmed her last known location as the vicinity of the bridge. Eyewitness accounts further corroborated this, with reports of a young woman seen standing alone at the site.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha acknowledged the incident earlier on Sunday. A statement from the Chief Minister’s Office read: “The report of Miss Sneha Debnath, a resident of Sabroom, who has reportedly gone missing in New Delhi, has come to the notice of the Chief Minister’s Office.”

The case continues to draw attention amid broader concerns over student mental health and public safety in urban areas.
