Authorities in County Cork have launched an investigation following the discovery of two bodies—an elderly man and woman, both in their 80s—at a residence in Glounthaune, a village east of Cork City.
The grim discovery was made on Monday evening after Gardaí from the Mayfield station responded to concerns raised by local residents. Upon arrival at the property, officers found both individuals deceased inside the home, according to local media outlet Cork Beo.
In a statement, a Garda spokesperson confirmed:
"Gardaí attended the scene and two bodies were located in the house—one man and one woman, both aged in their eighties. The scene has been preserved for a technical examination. No further information is available at this time."
The bodies were subsequently transferred to Cork University Hospital, where a post-mortem examination by the coroner is scheduled for Tuesday. The outcome of this examination will determine the direction of the ongoing Garda investigation.
While the cause of death remains unconfirmed, early reports suggest there is currently no indication of foul play. The investigation remains active, with authorities maintaining a cautious approach as they await the results of the forensic examination.
Local residents, shaken by the discovery, described the couple as quiet and well-regarded within the community. The incident has prompted an outpouring of concern and condolences from neighbours and friends.
