Execution of Indian Nurse Nimisha Priya Deferred by Yemeni Authorities

The execution of Indian national Nimisha Priya, a nurse from Kerala who is on death row in Yemen, has been temporarily postponed, according to her legal counsel. The revised date for her execution has not yet been communicated.

Sources confirmed to CNN-News18 that Yemeni authorities have halted the scheduled execution, originally set for July 16. The Government of India, which has consistently extended diplomatic and legal assistance in the case, has intensified its efforts in recent days to facilitate a resolution between Priya’s family and the family of the deceased.

Official correspondence confirming the postponement has been shared, and Indian representatives remain in close contact with Yemeni jail authorities and the prosecutor’s office in Sanaa, where Priya is currently imprisoned.

Nimisha Priya, a native of Palakkad district in Kerala, was sentenced to death in 2020 for the 2017 murder of her Yemeni business associate, Talal Abdo Mahdi. Her final appeal was rejected in 2023.

Reports from news agency PTI indicate that last-minute negotiations to avert the execution are underway, spearheaded by a prominent Sufi scholar in Yemen. These efforts were initiated following interventions by Kanthapuram A. P. Aboobacker Musliyar, the Grand Mufti of India.

Further discussions are expected to take place in Dhamar, the hometown of the deceased, involving representatives of renowned Islamic scholar Sheikh Habib Umar bin Hafiz and members of Mahdi’s family. Notably, a close relative of the deceased—who serves as both the Chief Justice of the Hodeidah State Court and a member of the Yemeni Shura Council—has reportedly traveled to Dhamar to participate in the talks.

On Monday, the Government of India informed the Supreme Court that its capacity to intervene further in the matter was limited. Attorney General R. Venkataramani, appearing before a bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, stated that the government was making “utmost possible” efforts and had reached out to influential religious leaders in Yemen to help resolve the case.
