Dublin, July 7: After a damp and overcast start to July, brighter days may soon be on the horizon for Ireland. Weather models are now indicating the possibility of a significant warm spell later this week, with forecasters suggesting that temperatures could climb beyond 25°C by Friday, potentially marking the onset of the country’s first heatwave of the summer.
Alan O’Reilly, the well-known weather commentator behind the popular Carlow Weather platform, delivered a cautiously optimistic outlook in his Sunday update, noting that conditions are set to gradually improve throughout the week. Sharing a video update via social media platform X, O’Reilly remarked:
“There’s some good news for those hoping for a return to summer sunshine. The chances of warmer air arriving for Friday and the weekend are increasing.”
While Sunday morning began on a dull and damp note in many areas, O’Reilly noted that sunnier intervals were expected to develop by the afternoon. He explained the subtle meteorological distinctions between light drizzle and measurable rainfall and forecasted relatively dry conditions overall for the coming days.
“It’s not going to be an amazing week,” he said, “but it is going to get better and better. Monday will remain breezy, especially in the northwest, but we can expect good sunny spells in most regions, particularly across the south and southeast where temperatures will be warmest.”
As the week progresses, conditions are forecasted to steadily improve. By midweek, only occasional light showers are expected, with minimal rainfall anticipated nationwide.
“By Wednesday and Thursday, we should start seeing a warm-up. If the high-pressure system continues to hold off the Atlantic front, the country may escape the typical rain and wind associated with western disturbances,” O’Reilly added.
Looking ahead to the weekend, O’Reilly expressed cautious optimism that Ireland could experience a marked rise in upper air temperatures, ushering in warmer conditions by Friday.
“There is still a degree of uncertainty, but the outlook is increasingly favourable. We’re likely to see temperatures exceeding 25°C, with the weekend shaping up to be quite pleasant.”
Met Éireann Signals Possible Heatwave
Echoing this outlook, national meteorological agency Met Éireann has indicated that Ireland could be on the verge of its first official heatwave of the season. According to its definition, a heatwave consists of five consecutive days with maximum temperatures above 25°C. Early forecasts suggest that this threshold could be met or even surpassed during the upcoming week.
With high pressure expected to dominate and moisture levels dropping, conditions are favourable for a sustained period of dry, warm weather—offering a welcome reprieve after weeks of grey skies and unsettled patterns.
For farmers, holidaymakers, and sunseekers alike, the emerging forecast offers a reason to look ahead with anticipation.
