New Delhi, July 29 – Congress leader Manish Tewari took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday to post a set of patriotic verses, just hours after it became known that he would not be among the party’s designated speakers in the Lok Sabha during the ongoing debate on Operation Sindoor.
Tewari, known for his articulate interventions on national security and foreign affairs, shared a poetic couplet seemingly directed at his exclusion. Quoting a report by Moneycontrol, he wrote:
"Hai preet jahaan ki reet sada,
Main geet wahan ke gaata hoon,
Bharat ka rehne waala hoon,
Bharat ki baat sunata hoon."
The Hindi lines loosely translate to: "Where love is the eternal tradition, I sing the songs of that land. I am a resident of India and I speak of its greatness." The post was widely interpreted as a subtle yet pointed response to the party leadership's decision to leave him out of the speaker’s list.
Tewari, along with fellow Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, had previously represented India in diplomatic delegations aimed at countering cross-border terrorism narratives abroad. Both leaders, however, were excluded from the debate on Operation Sindoor, raising eyebrows within political and media circles.
According to reports from news agency ANI, Tewari had formally requested to be allowed to speak in the House but was not included. Meanwhile, Tharoor too was approached by the Congress leadership to participate in the discussion, reportedly to question the government’s military action. However, sources claim Tharoor declined, stating that he believed the operation was a success. When asked to align with the party’s stand, Tharoor allegedly refused and chose to remain silent during the proceedings.
When approached by reporters for comment, Tharoor tersely responded with a cryptic “Maunvrat, maunvrat,” referring to a vow of silence.
The second week of Parliament’s Monsoon Session has been dominated by heated discussions on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. The ruling NDA has positioned the operation as a strong and necessary response to terrorism emanating from across the border, while opposition parties have focused their criticism on alleged intelligence failures and what they perceive as a lack of international support for the government’s actions.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been particularly vocal, accusing the government of diplomatic isolation and frequently citing U.S. President Donald Trump's claims of mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan to challenge the Modi-led administration's foreign policy credentials.
With tensions escalating on the floor of Parliament, the political fallout from both the Pahalgam tragedy and the military operation that followed continues to reverberate through the national discourse.
