Nearly eight weeks after a violent assault within Mountjoy Prison, inmate Stephen Kearney, 39, remains in a coma and is reported to be in critical condition. Kearney, who was serving a sentence for manslaughter, sustained severe head injuries in the attack and has shown no signs of regaining consciousness since June 6.
Initially admitted to the Mater Hospital following the incident, Kearney was later transferred to Beaumont Hospital for specialized care but has since been returned to the Mater. Prison authorities continue to maintain a security presence at his bedside.
A source within Mountjoy Prison described the situation as grim: “It is not looking good. He has not come out of the coma, and there seems to be little that can be done at this stage.”
According to reports, Kearney was assaulted by a group of four inmates in one of the prison's exercise yards. All four suspects have been identified by prison officials and were subsequently interviewed by GardaÃ. While no formal charges have been filed yet, Garda sources confirm that the investigation remains active and charges are expected in due course.
Kearney was nearing the end of his sentence and was scheduled for release at the end of June. He had previously served nine years for the 2004 manslaughter of 18-year-old Francis Gallagher, who died following an altercation on October 25 of that year.
