Operation Sindoor Sparks Heated Debate in Lok Sabha: Amit Shah Counters Chidambaram on Terror Origins

New Delhi, July 29: A fierce exchange unfolded in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday as Union Home Minister Amit Shah responded strongly to Congress leader and former Union Minister P. Chidambaram’s remarks questioning the origin of terrorists involved in the recent Pahalgam terror attack. Shah asserted that the government possesses concrete evidence confirming the attackers were Pakistani nationals.

“We have their voter ID numbers. The rifles and cartridges recovered were manufactured in Pakistan,” Shah said during a special discussion on Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam massacre, directly addressing doubts raised by the opposition. “This is not speculation; it’s documented proof.”

Shah accused Chidambaram of indirectly defending Pakistan by casting doubt on the nationality of the terrorists. “Yesterday, they [Congress] asked where the terrorists came from and who was responsible. Of course, as the ruling government, the responsibility is ours,” Shah said. “But Chidambaram ji questioned the evidence of their Pakistani origin. I ask him—what does he gain by defending Pakistan? In making such statements, is he not giving Pakistan a clean chit?”

The Home Minister continued, “It is unfortunate that a former Home Minister of India is effectively exonerating Pakistan on a global platform.”

Terrorists Neutralised Under Operation Mahadev

During the same discussion, Shah announced that three terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack were neutralised on Monday in a coordinated joint operation by the Indian Army, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and Jammu and Kashmir Police in the outskirts of Srinagar. The mission was part of the ongoing counter-terror effort named Operation Mahadev.

Chidambaram’s Controversial Remarks

The debate was triggered by a recent video interview of P. Chidambaram with The Quint, in which he questioned the assumption that the Pahalgam attackers were foreign nationals. “For all we know, they could be homegrown terrorists. Why do you assume they came from Pakistan? There is no evidence of that. They’re also hiding the losses,” Chidambaram said, prompting sharp criticism from the government benches.

Following public backlash, Chidambaram later clarified that his comments had been taken out of context and misinterpreted.
