A massive earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Russia’s Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday, prompting widespread tsunami alerts and precautionary evacuations across multiple countries, according to local and international authorities.
Initially reported as a magnitude 8.0 event by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the tremor was later upgraded to 8.8 following further seismic analysis. The powerful undersea quake generated tsunami waves reaching up to 4 metres (approximately 13 feet) along parts of the Kamchatka coastline, regional emergency minister Sergei Lebedev confirmed.
Authorities in Russia have urged residents to evacuate low-lying coastal zones and remain vigilant as the tsunami threat persists.
In response to the seismic activity, tsunami advisories were issued across the Pacific. U.S. agencies released alerts for Alaska’s coastal regions, while Hawaii was placed under a low-level tsunami watch as a precautionary measure.
Japan’s Meteorological Agency also issued a tsunami advisory, cautioning that waves as high as 3 metres could impact the country's Pacific seaboard. The agency urged the public to stay away from beaches and waterfront areas, warning that multiple waves may strike over an extended period.
“Do not enter the sea or approach the coast until the tsunami warning is officially lifted,” the agency said, noting that earlier projections had indicated wave heights of up to one metre.
Emergency response teams in the affected regions remain on high alert, monitoring developments and coordinating with international partners to assess ongoing risks.
