A tsunami wave struck the northern Kuril Islands early Wednesday after a powerful earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale was recorded near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, prompting swift evacuations in the region.
According to Sakhalin Region Governor Valery Limarenko, the first tsunami wave reached the shores of Severo-Kurilsk—a remote Russian coastal town with a population of just over 2,500—shortly after the seismic event. Authorities immediately ordered a full evacuation of the town to higher ground.
“Residents remain safe on elevated terrain while the tsunami threat is being assessed,” Governor Limarenko confirmed, adding that emergency services are operating in high-alert mode. “All necessary measures are being taken to ensure public safety and restore normalcy in the affected areas,” he said.
Video footage circulated by regional media showed residents hastily moving to higher ground as tsunami sirens echoed through the town. Though there have been no immediate reports of casualties or widespread destruction, officials confirmed that the Alaid fish processing plant in Severo-Kurilsk was submerged. All workers were safely evacuated from the facility before the flooding occurred.
A tsunami warning remains in effect across the Kuril Island chain. Elena Semenova, head of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk seismic station, told RIA Novosti that authorities in various settlements are actively monitoring coastal areas and maintaining evacuation protocols as a precaution.
Emergency response teams continue to stand by, with coastal surveillance and public safety operations ongoing throughout the region.
