Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva held a 40-minute phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday, the Brazilian presidential palace confirmed. According to the official statement, Putin shared details of his recent discussions with the United States and outlined “recent peace efforts between Russia and Ukraine.”
The two leaders also reviewed cooperation within the BRICS bloc of emerging economies and exchanged views on the prevailing global political and economic landscape.
The call forms part of a series of diplomatic engagements by Putin in recent days, ahead of his anticipated meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump next week. On Friday, the Russian leader held talks with the heads of state of China, India, and other Central Asian and European nations, briefing them on his contacts with Washington regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The conversation between Lula and Putin comes amid rising trade tensions between Brazil and the United States. The dispute was sparked by Washington’s recent decision to impose a 50% tariff on certain Brazilian imports — a move Trump linked to what he described as a “witch hunt” against his ally and Brazil’s former right-wing president, Jair Bolsonaro. While some goods, such as orange juice and aircraft, received reduced tariff rates, the measures have drawn sharp criticism from BrasÃlia.
In an interview with Reuters on Wednesday, Lula said he intended to consult with leaders of BRICS — which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa — to formulate a collective response to the U.S. tariffs. The Brazilian president spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday and is expected to continue similar consultations in the coming days.
The trade rift intensified last month when Trump threatened BRICS nations with an additional 10% tariff during the group’s summit in Rio de Janeiro.
