Jashpur, Chhattisgarh: In a chilling incident, a 28-year-old man allegedly hacked his mother to death with an axe in Jashpur district on Tuesday, mutilating her body beyond recognition before sitting beside the corpse for hours, singing songs and threatening anyone who came near.
The accused, identified as Jeet Ram Yadav, attacked his 59-year-old mother, Gulabi, at around 5 a.m. in Bendrerbhadra settlement under Kunkuri police limits. According to eyewitnesses, Yadav struck her repeatedly until she died on the spot.
Shocked neighbours recounted seeing him sitting just metres away from the body, humming songs in apparent rage and playing with sand. Terrified residents raised the alarm but did not intervene, as Yadav brandished the axe at anyone who attempted to approach.
By the time police reached the scene, hundreds of locals had gathered outside the house. Officers faced resistance as the accused grew increasingly violent, even attempting to attack them.
“It took nearly four hours of negotiation and tactical effort before he could be overpowered and taken into custody,” said Jashpur Superintendent of Police Shashimohan Singh.
The motive for the brutal killing remains unclear. Police said preliminary findings suggest that Yadav may be mentally unstable, though a detailed investigation is underway.
The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and a case of murder has been registered.
